Our Story

Brumi Lestari

Brumi Lestari is a youth initiative founded in 2024 with a shared vision of reducing the production of food waste with the focus on Food & Beverages companies in Brunei Darussalam, thereby promoting and ensuring responsible consumption and production practices.

Where It All Began

Our Journey

Our journey started at the 2nd SDG Youth Dialogue, held from 24 to 27 June 2024, at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Organised by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) through the Special National Coordination Committee (SNCC) on SDGs, in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), and UBD School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE), this dialogue brought together 60 passionate youth to explore SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Conducted by Brunei Youth Council and Green Brunei, and supported by UNDP, UNRCO, and other environmental partners, the four-day programme included expert talks, field visits, and project ideation workshops. Through mentorship and hands-on learning, we were challenged to think critically about waste, sustainability, and innovation. And that’s where Brumi Lestari was born: as our team’s answer to tackling food waste and promoting sustainable food systems in Brunei.

Brumi Lestari Was Born

During the SDG Youth Dialogue, our team came together with a shared concern for the alarming rate of food waste in Brunei and a strong desire to be part of the solution. As we brainstormed ideas, we wanted our project’s name to reflect both our national identity and our environmental aspirations.

Although our academic backgrounds are diverse, Aina studies Biomedical Science at UBD, Irma is in Accounting and Finance at UBD, Tasha is studying Interior Design at Politeknik Brunei, and Ummi is majoring in Food Science and Technology at UTB — our differences became our greatest strength. While none of us had formal experience in sustainability or tech innovation, we brought unique perspectives and skills to the table. Through teamwork, curiosity, and a shared commitment to SDG 12, we developed Brumi Lestari as a creative solution to help F&B businesses reduce food waste, adopt more efficient practices, and play an active role in building a sustainable future

Lestari, which means sustainable.

When combined, Brunei Bumi Lestari expresses our vision for a greener and more sustainable Brunei, and when shortened, it became Brumi Lestari.

Recognized for Our Potential

Brumi Lestari was selected as one of the four winners of the 2nd SDG Youth Dialogue 2024, receiving a BND 3,000 seed grant to further develop our idea. We were also honoured under the 'Responsible Production' category at the BIBD Sustainability Youth Leadership Awards, which celebrates youth-led initiatives addressing SDG 12. Our project focuses on reducing pre-consumer food waste in Brunei using waste analysis. Alongside three other winning teams, we will work with strategic partners over nine months to turn our ideas into impactful solutions. This award reflects BIBD’s commitment to youth empowerment, sustainability, and Brunei Vision 2035.
